Bringing joy to seniors through music.

Music therapy has been shown to comfort the elderly and help them cope with stress.

The Noteworthy Project is one 5th grader’s mission to bring music into the lives of seniors living in rehabilitation centers and nursing homes in order to comfort them and hopefully speed their recovery from illness.

St. Catherine’s Rehabilitation Hospital and Villa Maria Nursing Center

I visited St. Catherine’s, a 199-bed skilled nursing facility in North Miami, Florida. After connecting with the director of recreational therapy, I was granted permission to play piano on several occasions to the sick people who live there in the hope of comforting them and speeding their recovery.

A heartfelt performance for seniors

During my recital, I played Rage Over the Lost Penny by Beethoven, Minuet in G Minor by Bach, Ecossaise in G by Beethoven, Love Story by Lai, and I concluded with Concerto by Tchaikovsky. My performance was met with cheers and applause. When the patients requested an encore, I happily played The Clowns by Kabalevsky. I was so glad that my music delighted and moved them.

“Older adults can especially benefit from listening to music, as it gives them an outlet for creativity, socialization, and mental stimulation.”
